Atemoya combines the creamy flesh of cherimoya with some of the heat tolerance of sugar apple. The result is a fruit that often succeeds in climates too warm for pure cherimoya.
Cherimoya fruit is typically heart-shaped or conical with soft overlapping scales. Atemoya fruit is more rounded or conical and carries a bumpy, slightly warty skin that is smoother near the base and more knobby near the stem. Size ranges overlap, though atemoya often stays smaller than the largest cherimoyas.
Flesh texture differs slightly. Cherimoya is smooth and melting. Atemoya is also creamy yet can show a mild graininess inherited from the sugar-apple parent. Flavor in both is tropical and sweet; atemoya sometimes leans a little closer to vanilla or pineapple while cherimoya keeps the layered banana-strawberry notes.
A ripe atemoya from the grafted tree once softened evenly and scooped like soft custard. The aroma was bright and clean, with less of the fermented edge that appears in overripe cherimoya.
Climate response is the practical dividing line. Cherimoya needs 50 to 100 chilling hours and prefers mild summers. Atemoya tolerates warmer nights and higher humidity and sets fruit more consistently in locations where cherimoya struggles with heat. In coastal San Diego both succeed, yet atemoya shows less stress during hot inland spells.

Storage follows the same pattern. Pick both when the skin lightens and the fruit yields slightly to pressure. Ripen at room temperature, then refrigerate for one or two days. Atemoya sometimes holds an extra day before the flesh turns watery.
