I first tasted guanabana at a market stall near the border and immediately compared it to the cherimoyas ripening on my San Diego trees. The two fruits share a family resemblance yet differ in almost every practical way once you grow and eat them side by side.

Cherimoya is Annona cherimola, also called chirimoya or custard apple in some regions. Guanabana is Annona muricata, widely known as soursop or graviola. Both belong to the Annonaceae family, but their origins, size, skin, flavor, and climate needs set them apart.

Cherimoya comes from the cool Andean highlands of Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia. Guanabana is native to the warm lowlands of the Caribbean, Central America, and northern South America.

Cherimoya fruit is usually heart-shaped or conical and weighs from half a pound to several pounds. The skin is green with soft overlapping scales. Guanabana fruit is larger, often oblong, and can reach ten pounds or more. Its skin is covered with soft spines that give it a prickly feel.

The flesh of cherimoya is smooth, white, and custard-like with a flavor that mixes banana, pineapple, and strawberry. Guanabana flesh is also white but more fibrous and juicy, with a brighter, more acidic taste that combines pineapple, strawberry, and citrus notes.

A fully ripe cherimoya from my oldest tree once softened to the point that a spoon slid through it like soft ice cream. The aroma filled the kitchen with pure tropical sweetness and no sharp edge.

Climate requirements diverge sharply. Cherimoya needs 50 to 100 chilling hours below 45 F and prefers mild summers with cool nights. Guanabana thrives in continuous heat and high humidity and suffers when temperatures drop near freezing for long. In coastal San Diego the first crop succeeds; the second rarely does without greenhouse protection.

I once tried to force a guanabana tree through a cool winter by wrapping it heavily. The leaves dropped and the growing tips died back. Recovery took an entire season and the tree never set fruit. Cherimoya trees beside it continued without pause.

Both fruits contain annonacin in the seeds and skin. Discard those parts completely. The toxin levels are higher in some analyses of guanabana leaves and seeds, so caution remains essential.

Pollination is similar for both. Flowers open female first, then male. Hand-pollination improves set rates outside the native ranges. In my experience cherimoya responds more consistently to the brush method under California conditions.

What happens if you plant guanabana seed in a location that regularly dips below 40 F at night? The young tree often stagnates or dies back, while a cherimoya seedling in the same spot continues to grow.

Uses differ as well. Cherimoya is almost always eaten fresh or blended into smooth desserts. Guanabana is frequently juiced or turned into ice cream and drinks because the fibrous texture is easier to strain. Both can be frozen, yet the smoother cherimoya flesh holds up better as a spoonable treat.

  1. Identify the fruit by skin texture: scales for cherimoya, spines for guanabana.
  2. Check the flavor profile once ripe: mild and creamy versus tangy and bright.
  3. Match the tree to climate: mild winters with chill for cherimoya, continuous warmth for guanabana.
  4. Remove all seeds and skin before eating either fruit.

Nutrition numbers are close. Both supply vitamin C, potassium, and fiber. Guanabana often shows higher vitamin C in some tables, while cherimoya tends to be higher in certain B vitamins. Calories per 100 grams sit in the 65–75 range for both.

If your site has cool summer nights and a modest winter chill, plant cherimoya. If you have reliable heat and humidity with no frost risk, guanabana becomes the better choice.

Storage follows the same pattern. Both fruits are picked firm and ripened at room temperature until they yield to gentle pressure. Once soft they last only a day or two in the refrigerator. Guanabana’s larger size means it softens unevenly if left whole; cutting it into sections can help.

Have you noticed that guanabana juice stains more readily than cherimoya puree? The higher acidity and different fiber structure make cleanup a bit more involved.

After years of comparing the two I keep only cherimoya in the ground. The fruit arrives reliably each season, the flavor stays complex without sharp edges, and the trees handle our coastal pattern without special protection. Guanabana remains a market treat rather than a farm crop here.

In San Diego the local climate and my own preference both point to cherimoya. The scaly green fruit softens into a spoonable dessert that needs no added sugar. Guanabana stays a tropical specialty best left to warmer zones.
