Cherimoya is Annona cherimola, also known as chirimoya. Sugar apple is Annona squamosa, commonly called sweetsop. Both belong to the Annonaceae family, yet they differ in origin, elevation preference, fruit structure, and flavor intensity.

Cherimoya fruit is heart-shaped or conical and can weigh from half a pound to several pounds. The skin is green with soft overlapping scales. Sugar apple fruit is smaller, usually two to four inches across, and covered with thick, knobby segments that separate easily when ripe. The flesh of sugar apple is divided into distinct lobes, each holding a seed, while cherimoya flesh is more continuous and smooth.

Flavor profiles diverge as well. Cherimoya offers a complex mix of banana, pineapple, and strawberry with mild acidity. Sugar apple is sweeter and simpler, often described as pure tropical custard with less of the layered notes.

A fully ripe sugar apple from a friend’s tree once broke open in my hand. The segments pulled apart cleanly and the flesh tasted intensely sweet, almost candy-like, with none of the bright edge I find in cherimoya.

Climate needs set the practical limit. Cherimoya requires 50 to 100 chilling hours and mild summers. Sugar apple thrives in continuous warmth and higher humidity and sets fruit poorly when nights stay cool. In coastal San Diego the first crop succeeds; the second rarely reaches full potential without extra heat.

I once grafted a sugar apple scion onto a cherimoya rootstock. The graft took, yet the fruit stayed small and the tree dropped leaves earlier than pure cherimoya nearby. The experiment confirmed that elevation and chill preferences run deeper than rootstock alone.

Both fruits carry toxic compounds in the seeds and skin. Discard those parts completely before eating. The seeds of sugar apple are especially easy to miss inside the segments.

Pollination follows the same pattern for both. Flowers open female first, then male. Hand-pollination raises fruit set outside native ranges. In my experience cherimoya responds more reliably to the brush method under California coastal conditions.

What happens if you plant sugar apple seed in a site that regularly drops below 50 F at night during winter? The young tree often grows slowly and flowers sparsely, while a cherimoya seedling in the same spot continues on schedule.

Uses overlap but lean differently. Cherimoya is eaten fresh or blended into smooth desserts. Sugar apple is also eaten fresh and works well in drinks because the segments separate cleanly. Both freeze reasonably well, though the smoother cherimoya texture holds up better as a spoonable treat.

  1. Check the skin: soft scales point to cherimoya; thick knobs point to sugar apple.
  2. Examine the flesh: continuous and melting versus clearly segmented.
  3. Match the climate: mild winters with chill for cherimoya; steady warmth for sugar apple.
  4. Remove every seed and all skin before serving either fruit.

Nutrition figures are similar. Both supply vitamin C, fiber, and potassium. Sugar apple often shows higher vitamin C and iron per 100 grams in some tables, while cherimoya tends to be lower in calories and higher in certain B vitamins. Calories sit near 75 for cherimoya and closer to 94 for sugar apple.

If your site delivers cool summer nights and a modest winter chill, plant cherimoya. If you have reliable heat and little temperature drop, sugar apple becomes the stronger choice.

Storage is nearly identical. Both are picked firm and ripened at room temperature until they yield to gentle pressure. Once soft they last one or two days in the refrigerator. Sugar apple segments can be pulled apart and frozen individually more easily than whole cherimoya.

Have you noticed that sugar apple softens more unevenly than cherimoya when left on the counter? The segmented structure causes some lobes to ripen ahead of others.

After years of side-by-side observation I keep only cherimoya in the ground. The fruit arrives on a reliable winter schedule, the flavor stays complex, and the trees handle our coastal pattern without special protection. Sugar apple remains a market fruit rather than a main crop here.
