Those areas sit in USDA zones 10b through 11b, where winters rarely touch freezing. Central and northern Florida are out of the conversation entirely, since even a light frost is fatal to this tree.

Durian drops its leaves and usually dies once temperatures fall below 45 F. This is not a plant that shrugs off a cold snap and recovers in spring. A single bad night can kill a tree you have babied for six years.

Here is the trap in the zone numbers: they describe average extreme lows, not the one radiational-cooling night that actually matters. Anyone chasing reliable crops of it in the United States is still better served by Hawaii or Puerto Rico, where the tree never has to survive a cold night at all.
