Reading the fruit before you buy
Size is the first tell. A true Golden Phoenix is tiny for a durian, often under 1.5 kilograms, small enough to sit in one palm. The husk confirms it next, because the thin husk is one of its signatures, thin enough that you can pry the fruit open by hand without a cleaver.
Inside sit pale yellow to almost white lobes, a color some Singapore sellers call banana milk. The seeds are small and flat, so a fruit this small still gives more flesh than its size suggests. That high flesh ratio is a big part of why connoisseurs keep paying for it.
D198 is a pure old-tree variety, not a modern selection bred for shelf life or uniform size. That heritage explains the fruit-to-fruit variation you will taste, since two Golden Phoenix from the same stall can differ in bitterness depending on the tree and the day the fruit dropped.
Aroma runs strong despite the mild reputation. You get sweet and floral notes first, then an oniony, faintly garlicky depth, and sometimes a whiff of alcohol as it ripens. The taste follows that same arc: floral sweetness up front, then a slow bitter finish that veteran eaters chase and beginners sometimes find sharp.

Push past ripe and this variety turns on you. An overripe Golden Phoenix leans hard into alcohol and sour bitterness, and because the flesh is already watery, a day too long makes it read as fermented rather than complex.
Can you tell a ripe D198 from an overripe one by smell alone? Once the aroma has tipped from floral-sweet toward pure solvent, the tree has done its work and gravity has done the rest.
Growing it, and whether you should bother
This is a strict tropical, and I will not pretend otherwise. Durian wants mean temperatures of 24 to 30 C, humidity around 75 to 85 percent, and evenly distributed rainfall between 1,500 and 2,500 millimeters a year. The tree stops growing once mean daily temperature falls below 22 C, and cold under 15 C damages it outright.
Soil weighs as heavily as heat. Golden Phoenix, like any durian, needs deep, well-drained loam at pH 5.5 to 6.5, since the shallow feeder roots rot in waterlogged ground. Space full-size trees 30 to 40 feet apart, give them six or more hours of direct sun, and shelter them from wind that snaps the brittle limbs.
Never let a durian sit in standing water. The feeder roots run shallow, under about 30 centimeters, and a week of soggy soil invites Phytophthora root rot that can kill a young tree before it ever flowers.
Grafted D198 trees fruit in 4 to 6 years, while seedlings can drag out to 8 or more and may not come true to the parent. A mature tree also needs a dry spell of two to four weeks to trigger flowering, which is the hardest condition to fake in a wet greenhouse. My own two trees flowered once in five years and dropped every fruitlet at marble size.
Before anyone outside the tropics orders a tree, these are the non-negotiables I walk through:
- Year-round warmth above 22 C, with no frost ever
- At least 1,500 mm of rain or equivalent irrigation, about 2 inches a week
- Deep loam at pH 5.5 to 6.5 with sharp drainage
- A dependable 2 to 4 week dry spell to set flowers

When you hit a good one, the payoff is real. My best Golden Phoenix last July opened with that floral note, held a custard consistency on the spoon, and finished with a bitterness that outlasted the Musang King I ate beside it. For the price, nothing else came close that week.
At a stall, this is the order I check a Golden Phoenix before paying:
- Weigh it in hand, expecting something small yet dense for its size
- Smell the stem end for a floral-sweet aroma, not pure alcohol
- Press a thorn base gently to feel for slight give, meaning ripe and not rock-hard
- Shake it lightly and listen for a soft internal shift, a sign the lobes have loosened
- Have the seller open it on the spot and check for pale, intact lobes
A reliable field test is the stem: it should look freshly cut and slightly moist, not dried and cracked. A dry, corky stem means the fruit was cut days ago, and on a variety this watery, those days cost you more than they would on a firmer durian like D24.
The small flat seeds are the reason this variety earns its keep. A tiny fruit still hands you a real amount of edible flesh once you subtract that thin seed. What I tell a first-timer
Start with D198 if you want to learn where the sweet meets the bitter without paying Musang King money. Buy it fresh and early in the window, eat it the day it opens, and pass on any fruit that already smells of solvent. Growing your own only makes sense inside the tropics, and even there a grafted tree plus four years of patience is the entry fee.
