Ask ten durian growers how many trees belong on a hectare and you will get answers from thirty to nearly three hundred, which sounds unhelpful until you see what drives the spread. The number is not fixed by the crop. It is set by how big you let each tree get and how much light your site carries, with your pruning discipline deciding the rest.

On our Exotic Fruits and Vegetables setup I only have room for a handful of durians under cover, so I plant them tight and keep every one topped. That is the same bargain a high-density orchard makes at scale, and running it small has shown me exactly where crowding starts to cost you.

How Many Trees, Really

Start with the working answer. Most orchards run 70 to 125 trees per hectare, which lines up with the 9 to 12 meter spacings that suit full-size trees. Push tighter and you can reach 150 to 280, but only with trees held deliberately small.

The most common default is a 9 by 9 meter grid, which comes to about 123 trees per hectare and suits most cultivars without much fuss. Wider grids trade yield per hectare for lower labor, and tighter grids do the reverse.

Durian is a sun-hungry tree, and shade is the hidden ceiling on density. When canopies meet and the interior goes dark, flowering and fruit set fall off on the shaded wood, so a crowded orchard can carry more trees and still yield less fruit.

That is the trap behind the big numbers. More trees is not more fruit once they start stealing each other’s light. Did you plan your spacing around the canopy a mature tree throws, or around the skinny sapling you are holding at planting?

Spacing and What It Comes To

The math is simple once you fix a spacing. A hectare is 10,000 square meters, so you divide that by the ground each tree occupies. A 10 by 10 meter tree takes 100 square meters, which lands you at 100 trees on the hectare.

To settle on your own number, work through it in order:

  1. Start from your cultivar’s mature canopy width, not the sapling in your hand.
  2. Choose a spacing, then divide 10,000 by the square meters each tree will occupy.
  3. Add about 15 percent if you plant on a triangular offset instead of a square grid.
  4. Decide honestly whether you will top and thin, and only go dense if the answer is yes.
  5. If you plant close, pick your thinning year now, before the canopies ever touch.

Layout shifts the count too. A triangular offset, where each row sits in the gaps of the one before, fits close to 15 percent more trees on the same land and opens the rows to better light and airflow than a square grid.

Use a triangular or offset layout if you want more trees without crowding them. Staggering the rows gives each canopy more room to breathe at the same nominal spacing, which is why many planting guides now draw the grid that way.

Soil pulls the number as well. Rich, deep ground grows a bigger canopy that crowds sooner, so fertile sites often plant a touch wider than thin ones. What decides your final count comes down to a short list of levers:

  • Cultivar vigor, since a big Monthong needs more room than a compact grafted tree
  • Soil fertility, because rich soil builds wider canopies that meet sooner
  • Sunlight and slope, as full sun on flat ground tolerates tighter spacing
  • Your pruning commitment, since only kept-short trees survive a dense grid
  • Layout, where a triangular offset beats a square grid on the same hectare

Why do the recommended numbers vary so much between countries? Soil and climate differ between regions, and cultivars vary in vigor, so a rich basalt site in Vietnam might plant 100 trees to a hectare while a grower on lighter gray soil goes to 125, each tuning the grid to how big their trees will grow.

One rule sits above the spacing math. Always plant grafted clones, never seedlings, because seedlings vary wildly in quality and vigor, which wrecks both your spacing plan and your ability to sell a consistent fruit. Grafted clones also bear two to three years sooner.

Wide, Dense, or In Between

The real decision is a strategy, not a distance alone. Traditional wide planting keeps trees far apart, asks little pruning, and lets each tree grow large, while a high-density block packs more trees in and leans hard on height control.

Done right, a high-density block pays off early. More trees on the ground means more fruit in the first bearing years, before any tree has grown large, which pulls the orchard’s income forward while you wait on the big canopies.

High-density plantings only work if you commit to topping and thinning. Pack trees close and skip the pruning, and the block turns into a dark tangle within a decade. Can you honestly promise the annual saw work a tight grid demands before you plant one?

Close spacing buys a thinning bill you cannot dodge. At tight grids the trees crowd by roughly year 8 to 10, and you have to cut out every second tree to save the rest, so plan and budget that removal from the start.

I have watched this go wrong. A grower I know set his trees at five meters and never topped them, and by the ninth season his middle rows were shaded skeletons he ended up ripping out at a loss. Spacing mistakes do not reverse cheaply once the trunks are thick.

If you do plant close on purpose, mark your removal trees at the start. Choose which trees come out at year eight before the canopies touch, and manage the keepers as the permanent grid from day one.

Most small growers overplant, myself included early on. It is easy to cram in saplings and hard to accept how much room a mature durian claims, so when in doubt, err wider, since a gappy young orchard beats a crowded mature one.

Do not chase the biggest tree count you can fit. Past the point where canopies shade each other, extra trees add cost and disease pressure without adding fruit, so the highest number on paper is rarely the most profitable one in the ground.
