The honest answer to where durian grows is a thin belt around the equator, not the sprawling map hopeful gardeners picture. Durio zibethinus is ultra-tropical, a rainforest tree that wants heat, wet air, and steady rain every month of the year. Push it much past 18 degrees of latitude and it starts refusing to fruit, and push it into a cold night and it can die outright.

I grow exotic fruit in San Diego County at nearly 33 degrees north, well outside that belt, so my durians live under heated poly rather than open sky. On our Exotic Fruits and Vegetables plots they are a study in what the tree tolerates, not a paying crop. That marginal-climate vantage point is exactly why the question of where durian will and will not grow interests me.

The narrow band durian actually wants

Temperature sets the first hard boundary. Durian does best between 77 and 86 F, keeps growing from the low 70s into the mid 90s, and stalls once mean daily temperatures drop under about 72 F. Below 46 F the tree suffers chilling injury, sheds its leaves, and often dies, which is the limit every subtropical grower eventually meets.

Chilling injury is not a slow decline you can nurse back. One night in the low 40s can strip a young tree bare within days, so a single cold snap ends years of growth.

Water is the second boundary, and it cuts both ways. Durian wants evenly distributed rainfall of at least 1,500 mm a year, ideally 2,000 mm or more, yet its shallow roots rot in standing water, so the ground has to drain fast while staying moist.

Do you get even one night below 46 F in a normal year? If so, an outdoor durian is a gamble you will probably lose, however warm your summers run.

Latitude is a useful shorthand for all of this. Commercial durian sits within 12 to 15 degrees of the equator, fruits reliably out to about 18 degrees in northern Thailand and Australia, and only rarely sets fruit beyond that without heavy intervention.

Soil and elevation quietly finish the list. Durian wants deep, free-draining loam at pH 5.0 to 6.5, and it stops performing above roughly 600 to 900 meters, where nights turn too cool. A brief dry spell of two to four weeks triggers flowering, after which the tree needs heavy water again to swell the fruit.

Matching a specific site against all of these at once is where most would-be growers get an unpleasant surprise. Running your local temperature, rainfall, and humidity through a suitability check before you buy a tree tells you quickly whether you are in durian country or fooling yourself.

The map of where durian actually grows

Durian is native to the equatorial lowlands of the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, and Sumatra, which is still the heart of its range. From there cultivation spread across Southeast Asia and into a handful of tropical outposts far from home.

Thailand leads world production by a wide margin, with Chanthaburi province alone accounting for roughly half the national crop. Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines fill out the core, all sitting inside the equatorial band where the tree barely registers the seasons.

Near the equator, where there is no real winter, durian often flowers and fruits twice a year. In Malaysia and Sumatra the peaks tend to land around June and December, driven by dry spells rather than by day length.

The fringe is where the story gets interesting for outsiders. Established trees fruit in northern Australia, South Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and parts of the Caribbean, though none at true commercial scale in the United States.

  • Hawaii has fruited durian as far north as Kauai at about 22 degrees, past the usual limit.
  • South Florida and Puerto Rico hold frost-free lowlands warm enough for backyard trees.
  • Northern Queensland in Australia sits near the 18-degree edge and produces fruit.
  • India grows it along stream banks where the roots reach constant water.

A frost-free tropical lowland is the deciding factor. Where those conditions hold, from Zanzibar to Dominica, durian has been coaxed into fruit far outside its native map.

Can your region supply a real dry spell followed by heavy rain on cue? Without that swing, a durian tree in an always-wet greenhouse may grow lush and never open a single flower.

Growing durian where it should not grow

My own trees are the test case for the marginal end. San Diego sits far outside the durian belt, so I grow grafted trees in large containers under heated poly, holding nights above 60 F through winter with a thermostat I watch more closely than the forecast.

Pollination is the problem no one warns you about indoors. Durian flowers open at night and depend on bats and large moths that my greenhouse simply does not have, so I hand-pollinate with a soft brush after dark, moving pollen flower to flower like a slow, unglamorous bee.

A greenhouse durian punishes overwatering faster than a field tree. With no tropical downpour to flush the pot and shallow roots sitting in a container, soggy mix invites the root rot that kills more potted durians than cold ever does.

Is your soil, or your potting mix, deep and fast-draining, or will it hold water around those shallow roots? Getting drainage wrong is how a tree that survived the winter still dies in spring.

  1. Start with a grafted tree, since seedlings can take 8 to 15 years to fruit and may not match the parent.
  2. Give it the largest container you can keep heated, with a free-draining mix over deep drainage.
  3. Hold winter nights above 60 F and daytime warmth in the 80s under cover.
  4. Impose a short dry spell before the growing season to prompt flowering, then water heavily.
  5. Hand-pollinate at night, because indoor spaces lack the bats and moths the tree expects.

Even done well, a potted durian yields a fraction of a tropical field tree, and some years it gives nothing at all. Working out how much water the tree needs across the season, and where drought or overwatering would put it at risk, is worth doing before you commit to the heating bill.

So where can you actually grow it

If you live within about 18 degrees of the equator, on frost-free lowland with deep draining soil and rain in most months, you live in durian country and the tree will mostly cooperate. Everywhere else, the answer narrows to a heated greenhouse, a big pot, and a tolerance for years of effort per handful of fruit.

Durian does not care about your greenhouse ambitions. It fruits where the climate allows and sulks everywhere else, which is why its map has stayed so small for so long.

My San Diego trees will never rival a Chanthaburi orchard, and I planted them knowing that. What they prove, leaf by leaf and the occasional hand-pollinated fruit, is exactly where the tree’s patience ends and a grower’s stubbornness has to take over.
