Let me be honest with you right up front: growing durian (Durio zibethinus) in San Diego is a little like raising a tropical parrot in a snowstorm. It can be done, but only if you cheat the climate at every turn. Climate, Site, and the Non-Negotiables
Durian wants 75-90°F during the day and refuses to sit below 50°F at night for long. At 45°F my trees drop leaves within 72 hours. At 40°F, young wood dies back. Below 37°F, you are writing a eulogy.
My first tree, a grafted Monthong I paid $220 for in 2013, died in a single February night when my greenhouse heater tripped a breaker. Low was 38°F for roughly five hours. By March the cambium was brown from the graft union up. One failed thermostat cost me three years of work.
Humidity matters nearly as much as heat. Durian evolved in 80-90% relative humidity, and San Diego’s Santa Ana winds can drop us to 12% overnight. I run two ultrasonic humidifiers in the greenhouse and never let RH fall under 65%, because leaf margins scorch fast below that.
Soil and Drainage
Think of durian roots as lungs, not straws. They need air as much as water. Heavy clay is a death sentence because Phytophthora palmivora — the root and patch canker pathogen — thrives in saturated ground.
My planting mix is 50% sandy loam, 30% coarse pine bark fines, and 20% perlite, built into a mound 18 inches tall and 5 feet across. Target pH is 5.5-6.5. I test annually with a $30 meter and drop pH with elemental sulfur at 1 pound per 100 square feet when it creeps past 6.8.

Planting and the First Two Years
Should you start from seed? Only if you enjoy waiting. Seedlings fruit in 8-12 years and won’t come true to type. Grafted trees from a known clone — Monthong, Chanee, D24, Musang King (Mao Shan Wang), Kanyao — fruit in 4-6 years and hold their parent’s flavor.
Durian seeds are recalcitrant, which is a botanist’s way of saying they die if they dry out. Fresh seed germinates in 5-8 days; seed that sat on a counter for a week germinates never.
- Buy a grafted tree, 24-36 inches tall, with a clean healed graft union and no circling roots.
- Acclimate it under 50% shade cloth for 3 weeks before planting — sudden full sun burns tender leaves in a single afternoon.
- Plant on a raised mound so the graft union sits 4-6 inches above surrounding grade.
- Mulch with 3-4 inches of wood chips, but keep an 8-inch bare collar around the trunk to prevent collar rot.
- Water deeply every 3 days for the first year: roughly 2 gallons per application on a young tree.
- Stake loosely for 12 months, then remove — trunk taper needs wind stress to develop.
Young durian want dappled light, not blazing sun. I lost that argument with myself in 2015, pulled the shade cloth off a 14-month-old Chanee in July, and watched half the canopy bleach white within four days. Shade for two years. It costs you nothing but patience.
The single biggest predictor of durian survival in a marginal climate is root zone drainage, not air temperature. Get the mound right and you buy yourself margin for every other mistake.
Feeding the King
Durian is a heavy feeder with a nasty magnesium and boron habit. My schedule on bearing trees looks like this:
- Vegetative flush: 15-15-15 at 2 pounds per tree, split monthly, February through June.
- Pre-flowering: switch to 8-24-24 to push flower initiation, 3 pounds per tree.

- Micronutrients: foliar magnesium sulfate at 1 tablespoon per gallon, monthly; boron at 0.5 ounce per tree annually — no more, boron toxicity is brutal.
- Organic matter: 5 gallons of aged compost per tree each spring, spread to the dripline.
Overfeed nitrogen and you get a beautiful green tree that never flowers. I did exactly that in 2018 — gorgeous canopy, zero fruit, and a very smug neighbor with a mango tree.

Durian roots are shallow and wide, running mostly in the top 12-18 inches of soil. Broadcast fertilizer from 18 inches out to the dripline, never against the trunk. A tree with a 10-foot canopy has roots reaching 14 feet out.
Flowering, Pollination, and Fruit Set
Here’s the part nobody warns you about: durian flowers open at dusk and are dead by dawn. In Malaysia, Eonycteris spelaea — the cave nectar bat — does the pollinating. San Diego has no such bat. So who pollinates yours? You do.
Why does hand pollination matter so much? Because natural fruit set on isolated durian without bats runs around 3-5%, while careful hand pollination between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. can lift that to 40-60%. That is the difference between two fruits and twenty.
I collect pollen from a second clone with a small artist’s brush around 7:30 p.m., store it in a film canister, and paint receptive stigmas from 8:00 to 10:30 p.m. Cross-pollination between varieties beats selfing nearly every time — my D24 pollinated with Monthong pollen sets about twice as heavily as D24 selfed.
After set, thin ruthlessly. A branch supporting five fruits will produce five mediocre ones or snap under 30 pounds of load. I keep one fruit per 30 inches of branch and cull the rest at golf-ball size.

Pests, Diseases, and Harvest
Phytophthora is the villain in every durian story. It shows as dark, weeping trunk lesions that smell faintly sour. I paint affected bark with phosphorous acid and drench the root zone every 90 days as prevention.
Do not plant durian within 20 feet of avocado. Both host Phytophthora, and my worst infection year followed exactly that mistake — I’d tucked a young Musang King next to a Hass. Both trees suffered.
Harvest is the reward, and durian will tell you when it’s time. The stem develops a corky abscission zone, the spines soften slightly at the base, and a tap with a knife handle returns a hollow, drum-like echo rather than a dull thud. Cut it, don’t wait for the fall.
A durian picked two days early is a potato. A durian picked at the right hour is custard, garlic, caramel, and something faintly like gasoline — and I mean that as praise.
Cut fruit at the stem while it still hangs, then let it soften for 24-48 hours at 75°F for peak flavor development. Refrigeration below 50°F halts ripening permanently and leaves the flesh rubbery.

Is durian worth it in a place it was never meant to grow? For me, absolutely — but I want you clear-eyed about the arithmetic. You’re looking at 4-6 years to first fruit from a graft, a heating bill that will make you wince every January, and a pollination routine that turns you into a nocturnal creature for six weeks a year.
What you get in return is a fruit that cannot be bought fresh in the United States at anything close to the quality you can grow yourself. Frozen Musang King is a photocopy of a painting. The real thing, warm off your own tree, is a different fruit entirely.
